Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been granted a number of emergency powers by the Hungarian legislature, the National Assembly, to deal with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The emergency powers included the ability to suspend enforcement of existing law, the ability to pass special decrees, restrictions on media outlets spreading fake news about the government’s handling of the coronavirus response, penalties for individuals violating quarantine, a suspension of Parliament and a ban on elections and national referendums. In order to allow Orbán the necessary flexibility to deal with the pandemic, these emergency powers will be indefinite.
“We cannot react quickly if there are debates and lengthy legislative and lawmaking procedures. And in times of crisis and epidemic, the ability to respond rapidly can save lives,” Orbán stated.
The globalist elites were quick to hit back, with Orbán drawing condemnation from the Council of Europe, the United Nations, Amnesty International, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the European Parliament for merely trying to protect his people.
Orbán received a two-thirds majority in favor of the emergency powers, securing the backing of his own conservative Fidesz party, the Christian Democratic People’s Party, and the nationalist Our Homeland Movement. The left-wing opposition and the anti-Semitic Jobbik party voted against the bill, downplaying the severity of the coronavirus situation.
As the coronavirus death toll continues to grow in the United States, Trump administration officials and Republican lawmakers should look more closely at the Hungarian model to ensure the safety and security of the American people from this virulent disease.
