Rodrigo Duterte desperately wants to bring law and order back to the Philippines, but a powerful monolithic institution stands in his way: The Catholic Church. Duterte has been frequently derided by Catholic Church officials in his country for so-called human rights abuses.
The Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines even rebuked Duterte earlier in the year by calling for “God’s mercy and justice on those who have blasphemed God’s Holy Name, those who slander and bear false witness, and those who commit murder or justify murder as a means for fighting criminality in our country.”
Duterte has had enough of this insolence, and he is firing back against the Catholic Church for what he believes is incredible hypocrisy.
“The most hypocritical institution in the entire Philippines is the Catholic Church and the Pope knows that,” Duterte said.
“No offense intended,” he added. “I have so many relatives who are gay. I have two brother-in-laws who are gay. But most of the priests there are homosexuals, almost 90 percent of you. So do not postulate on my morality.”
Duterte blamed the Catholic Church for many of the social problems facing his nation.
“We are very poor. We have a runaway population,” he said. “It’s because of the Church. They have always been against family planning. But the priests and the bishops are also into it producing more Filipinos. The idiots of our times.”
This is when Duterte did what he does best: become completely unhinged against the enemies of his nation.
“These bishops that you guys have, kill them. They are useless fools. All they do is criticise,” Duterte said.
“I never said I do not believe in God. What I said is your God is stupid, mine has a lot of common sense. That’s what I told the bishops. I never said I was an atheist,” he added to clarify fake news reports which said he claimed God is “stupid” and a “son of a whore.”
While Duterte may go overboard in his extreme attacks against the Catholic Church, he does have a point. At the behest of the Pope, the Catholic Church piously judges the nations of the world for not crippling their economies with carbon taxes and refusing to accept potentially dangerous third-world migrants while overlooking a heinous pedophilia scandal that has lasted for decades.
Pope Francis, an ideologue who likes to preach Marxism from atop his golden throne in Vatican City, has clearly strayed from the doctrine of Jesus Christ. Although Duterte is an imperfect messenger, he is putting the Catholic Church on notice for failing the people.
