The Chinese communists thought they were slick, at least until President Donald J. Trump showed up. Trump has frequently called the Chinese out for their dirty tricks, and now Africans are getting into the act.
“I want to bring to the attention of the international community the Chinese influence and corruption in Zambia,” said political activist James Lukuku who held a “China equals Hitler” sign as he protested in the capital of Lusaka.
Lukuku is expressing the fears of many native Africans who see China as the new colonial power of the region, working to get countries into debt in order to control their affairs and dominate their resources.
“China is about to take everything from Zambia. They have taken over our economy through these criminal debts. This government is contracting debts from China even without parliamentary approval,” Lukuku said.
The Zambian government reports that their debt is approximately $10.6 billion currently, but those numbers could be seriously understated. A similar situation happened in nearby Mozambique where the Chinese-influenced government was hiding an additional $2 billion in debt in order to fool its residents.
Zambian President Edgar Lungu denies that anything is wrong. He maintains that his regime is functioning properly and that all his critics are blowing hot air.
“I implore you to ignore the misleading headlines that seek to malign our relationship with China by mischaracterising our economic cooperation to mean colonialism,” Lungu said to lawmakers during a heated confrontation.
Opposition figure Stephen Katuka claims that the regime is lying and operating completely at the behest of these Chinese communists.
“In some instances the Chinese are beating Zambians in places of work for simply failing to follow instructions,” Katuka said.
The China blueprint of overloading countries with debt and making them beholden to their authoritarian communist government seems to be on display yet again in Zambia. If they want to make Zambia great again (as well as make Africa great again), they ought to throw the Chinese out and instill public officials who will keep foreign influence at bay!
