President Donald Trump in a WWE-esque showdown threw down the gauntlet to Democratic leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) last week where he claimed it was time for a government shutdown unless he got his border wall.
“If we don’t get what we want, one way or the other, whether it’s through you, through military, through anything you want to call, I will shut down the government,” Trump said right to Schumer’s face.
“I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck. … I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down,” the president added.
Just a week later, Trump has already capitulated on shutting down the government for the border wall. Chuck, Nancy and the Swamp win this round.
“We have other ways that we can get to that $5 billion that we’ll work with Congress,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Fox News while appearing Tuesday morning.
“At the end of the day, we don’t want to shut down the government. We want to shut down the border,” Sanders added.
While the Trump administration is still talking tough despite the obvious surrender, the Democrats are rightfully doing victory laps.
“It’s the wrong thing to do. It doesn’t work. It’s not effective. It’s the wrong thing to do and it’s a waste of money,” Pelosi said.
“What’s the Republicans’ plan? They don’t have one, they don’t know what to do. In the scuttlebutt, where we talk to one another, Senate Republican leadership has no idea what President Trump wants. Neither does House Republican leadership,” Schumer said.
“[Republicans have] got big problems in the House … and they don’t seem to know where the president is,” he added.
After getting shellacked in the 2018 mid-terms, the Republican Party is in disarray and President Trump’s hot air is not helping matters much. Until he gets serious about acting and not just talking, America will never be great again.
