Michigan Rep. Justin Amash said on Thursday that he’ll be leaving the Republican Party to become an independent as modern politics remains “trapped in a partisan death spiral.”

In response, North Carolina Rep. Mark Walker suggested that Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash leave the House Republican Conference: “We simply ran out of space for his ego,” he said “we should make sure he leaves Conference and his committee.”

In May, Amash became the sole Republican to support impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump — which was not well received by the rest of the GOP.

“Today, I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party,” Amash tweeted.

Trump responded on Twitter that he was glad Amash left. “Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is ‘quitting’ the Party. No Collusion, No Obstruction!” In addition, Trump described Amash as a “total loser.”
