The Metropolitan Republican Club in Manhattan, NYC, which dates back to 1902, was vandalized last night by members of local antifa, who spray-painted an ‘A’ on the front of the historic building which the Club has used for over 80 years.
The attack occurred in response to an event with the conservative activist, commentator, and provocateur Gavin McInnes, founder of the Proud Boys, which is planned for this evening. Antifa left a note on the Met Club’s door warning that this was “merely the beginning,” writing: “we are not passive, we are not civil, and we will not apologize.”
Earlier in the week, a leftist group on Twitter shared the Club’s address along with the message “Let’s Run Gavin McInnes out of town!,” and antifa members put up flyers in local neighborhoods stating “NEO NAZIS ARE COMING TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD THIS FRIDAY.” The club was also harassed by phone, as was Eventbrite.
According to officer Ian Reilly, they refuse to bow to far-left pressure and escalation of violence for the purpose of suppressing freedom of speech, and plan to go ahead with the sold-out event, with heavy police presence to assure the security of all who come.
McInnes commented on the hypocritical socio-economic background of many such violent far-left activists, saying “It’s amazing how obvious it is they are the children of professors. If you’re trying to intimidate someone, maybe don’t use a bunch of academic claptrap.”
The Met Club is not officially affiliated with the Republican Party.
